You\u2019ve finally made the decision to move, but you are looking around at your present surroundings and wondering where to begin.\u00a0 No matter how long you\u2019ve lived in a place, you most likely have accumulated items, saved things, and have memories.\u00a0 Your goal is to make decisions on what to take with you, so you don\u2019t have to pay to move things you are never going to use again, don\u2019t need, or don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n
Below is a checklist and a timeline that will help you feel less stressed:<\/p>\n
One Month in Advance<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Contact several moving companies to get estimates and then schedule.<\/li>\n
Stockpile supplies \u2013 boxes, bins, trash bags, tape, and sharpies for labeling.\u00a0 Labeling the boxes should include which room and the contents of the container.\u00a0 This will help when unpacking.<\/li>\n
Start with a room that has little sentimental value.<\/li>\n
Begin to de-clutter and pack.\u00a0 Pack items right away that you are not using at the time but want to take with you (books, out-of-season clothes, etc.).\u00a0 Keep clothes in drawers.\u00a0 Clothes can stay on hangers \u2013 either get cardboard wardrobes to hang them in or put trash bags over the hangers to keep them together.<\/li>\n
Ask yourself these 10 questions to help with making decisions on what to keep or not to keep.\n

Do you have a definitive use for the item?<\/li>\n
If it\u2019s broken or ripped, is it worth fixing?<\/li>\n
Does this item serve a worthwhile purpose in your life?<\/li>\n
Do you need to keep the item for legal purposes?<\/li>\n
Do you love the item?<\/li>\n
Would it be too hard or expensive to replace the item?<\/li>\n
Does anyone in your family or any friends want the item?<\/li>\n
Does the item fit?<\/li>\n
What\u2019s the worst that can happen if you don\u2019t keep the item?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
Develop a sorting process, making separate piles to keep like with like.\n

Items to keep and use.<\/li>\n
Items to give to family members or friends.<\/li>\n
Items to sell or donate.<\/li>\n
Items to discard.<\/li>\n
Items to shred.<\/li>\n

Two Weeks in Advance<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Take a photo of your electronics and how they are hooked up.<\/li>\n
Remember to change your address with the post office, family, friends, credit card companies, bank, newspaper, magazines, etc.<\/li>\n
Transfer school and medical records, if necessary.<\/li>\n
Inform utility companies (electric, water, gas, cable, phone) of the address change \u2013 to shut off utilities at your old place and to turn on utilities at your new place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Day Of<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Pack essentials boxes for everyone in the house.\u00a0 These should include clothes, toiletries, toys, or whatever is needed for the first 24 hours.<\/li>\n
Remember your furry friend (or fish, turtle, bird) \u2013 bowls for food and water, food, litter box for a cat, leash for a dog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Moving can be very overwhelming and hectic.\u00a0 But, it is also very exciting.\u00a0 See if you can have fun.\u00a0 Having fun might just lessen the stress for you.<\/p>\n
